\J\F0These tables show the correspondence between Stanford ASCII characters
and the runes presented in J. R. R. Tolkien's trilogy, \F1The Lord of the Rings\F0.
The first table gives the runes in the same order as the chart in Appendix
E of the books (the numbers given here correspond to those
in the Appendix). For each rune, the transliteration(s) given in the book is
shown, followed by the Stanford ASCII character used in the font RUNE32.
The second table includes the same information, but is ordered by the ASCII
codes, and includes three extra characters (space, period, and quote).
For the uninitiated: The runes are generally used phonetically,
and they have different pronunciations depending upon whether you are an
Elf or a Dwarf, where you're from, what era you're in, and (of course)
the phase of the moon. In the tables, pronunciations in parentheses
are used only by Elves, and those marked by asterisks are used only by Dwarves.
Note that #55 and #56 have two forms each. For more information, see the book.
It was attempted to have the more common characters correspond closely
to one or the other of the transliterations given in the book. Where this
became impracticable, an ASCII character was chosen which bore some physical
similarity to the rune or, as in the case of ∪ and 0, to the transliterated
character.
This listing was produced by POXing the file RUNES.POX[UP,DOC].\.
